Be careful of the company you keep

William Gibson quote

It’s not (always) your fault

As creative artists we tend to blame ourselves.

Maybe I’m not talented enough…
Maybe I’m not smart enough…
Maybe it’s just not meant to be…

Now of course there’s something to be said about taking responsibility for your choices and living with the consequences of your actions, but honestly trying to create stuff is hard enough without having the people around us constantly criticizing our every move.

Haters gonna hate

No matter what we do, there will always be people out there who are going to try and tear it apart.

Whether is out of jealousy, anger, or the fact that they’ve just had a really crappy day — there are going to be people who don’t like what we do. Unfortunately that’s just the way the creative game works.

Those who have the courage to create something and put it out there, whether online or off, will always be at the mercy of the opinions of others.

But as the author William Gibson says, “before you diagnose yourself with depression or low self-esteem, first make sure that you are not, in fact, just surrounding yourself with assholes.”

You may need to clean out your friend closet occasionally

If you look around and discover that some of the people around you aren’t very supportive, do whatever you can to distance yourself and find someone who will.

Life’s too short.
