This is Life

Here is the good here is the bad

Maybe or maybe not

Once there was an old farmer who had worked his crops for many years. One day his horse ran away. When they heard the news, his neighbors came to visit. “Such bad luck,” they said sympathetically.

“Maybe,” replied the farmer.

The next morning the horse returned, bringing with it three other wild horses. “How wonderful,” the neighbors exclaimed.

“Maybe,” replied the farmer.

The next day, the old man’s son tried to ride one of the untamed horses, was thrown, and broke his leg. The neighbors again came to offer their sympathy on his misfortune.

“Maybe,” replied the farmer.

The following day, military officers came to the village in order to draft young men into the army. Seeing that the son’s leg was broken, they passed him by. The neighbors congratulated the farmer on how well things had turned out.

“Maybe,” replied the farmer.

I remember this was one of my favorite stories from when I was a kid, because it reminded me that things aren’t always what they appear to be. What may seem like bad luck at first, may turn out to be for the best. Just as things that may seem to be good luck can sometimes blow up in your face down the road.

The thing is, you just don’t know until it happens, which is why there’s no reason to get upset or beat yourself up when things don’t turn out the way you expected.

Maybe it’s for the best, maybe it’s not — either way it’s the way it is.

The only real question, is how are you going to respond?

“Here’s the good. Here’s the bad. Here’s the bad in the good.
Here’s the good in the bad — and this is life.”
